Air Sampling to Labs and Mold Inspections in Chicago Area Properties

Mold can become a fast-moving danger to your Greater Matteson home or business, affecting many materials, contents, structural elements, and even those exposed. With how quickly the situation can get out of control, it is essential to work to address the colonization and remediate as promptly as possible. To accomplish this, home and business owners put their trust in the experience, and industry-leading equipment of our Applied Microbial Remediation Technicians (AMRT) accredited through the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC.)

Severe weather, high humidity levels, and other sources make mold damage for the Greater Chicago homes and businesses a perpetual threat. While many property owners can appreciate how damaging this situation can be, without seeing the problem, it can be challenging to know for sure that colonization exists. We have always encouraged our customers with the statement: “If you see it or smell it, you have it.” We have the expertise to offer mold inspections and air sampling to determine the presence of this threat and its severity.

We strive to find the relative humidity level from the time that we arrive, along with inspecting susceptive areas of the property for moisture vulnerabilities. This assessment has our remediators using moisture meters and sensors alone with thermal imagery to discover possible penetration points in attics, roofs, foundations, basements, and other areas of a home or business.

Additionally, our SERVPRO team performs mold assessment sampling, including after remediation work completes. The sample we take of the affected environment can get sent to a lab nearby for analysis, and under the care of trained specialists, can determine the concentration of active mold growth based on the elevated presence of spores and fungus.

We can also help to keep your property and its occupants safe with fast controlled demolition and build back services. We have a full-service team of general contractors that can help to repair, reconstruct, and renovate damaged areas of your home during the mitigation and cleaning processes of remediation.

Don’t Fear Your Flood Damage, Let SERVPRO Restore!

3/28/2022 (Permalink)

Flood damage in nothing to play with, let us help you recover your Homewood property.

As much as some Homewood property owners might believe that flood recovery is a straightforward process, there are many pitfalls and unexpected hazards that can exist for the DIY restorer. In many situations, people have leaned on the experience and extensive training of our SERVPRO water restoration team to help manage these emergencies. We have an understanding of these risks and know the appropriate approaches to keep our team, the structure, and any other occupants safe.

Even a process like extraction could have unforeseen risks, making flood damage in Homewood residences more challenging or unsafe for inexperienced individuals to complete. Damage assessment is a vital element to the scoping of projects, as this ensures that the right personnel and equipment are on-site to maximize efficiency and safety. Understanding these potential risks helps us to navigate flood losses, and even contamination concerns, in a way that can best protect your property and its contents.

Extraction in Basements or Crawl Spaces

Removing several feet of standing water can come with unexpected hazards in the basement or crawlspace of an area residence. Natural flooding can heavily saturate soil against the foundation of your house, which can lead to a collapse or bowing of a wall because of immense hydrostatic pressures. Our technicians monitor this progress throughout the extraction process by stopping at regular intervals for the water to settle.

Lingering Moisture

Extraction is never the final step of recovery after a flood incident. Drying involves many different machines and devices, most of which are unavailable to the DIY restorer. Without a working knowledge of moisture pockets and the migration of floodwater, you could miss drying out damp areas thoroughly, which can promote microbial threats. Our SERVPRO team utilizes thermography and surface moisture meters to document dampness that must get addressed.

Flooding can significantly damage a home if it is not dealt with quickly. As tempting as it might be to clean and dry out these effects on your own, there are many instances where this can become a costly mistake. Let our SERVPRO of Matteson-Homewood team help however you need by calling (708) 747-9925.

SERVPRO Asks: If You Rent, Are You Covered?

3/13/2022 (Permalink)

We see disasters everyday... and one of the saddest things is when people don't have rental insurance and loose everything.  If you have questions about rental insurance you should speak to an agent for more information.

Top myths and the facts—about renters insurance from State Farm:

  1. The landlord's insurance covers your possessions. Don't count on it. Most landlords' insurance covers only the building and damages due to negligence.
  2. Renters insurance is expensive. In this case, the numbers speak for themselves. The average renters policy costs just $12 a month for up to $30,000 in personal property coverage. That's solid coverage for less than the cost of a couple of cups of coffee a week.
  3. Still concerned about price? Your insurer will work with you to find the combination of coverage and costs that suits your needs. You might even qualify for a discount by taking some simple home safety precautions or purchasing another policy, such as auto insurance, with the same insurer.
  4. You don't need insurance if your stuff isn't expensive. Most renters' belongings cost more than they think.
  5. Think that number is too high? Take a moment to add up the approximate cost of your computer, television, stereo, furniture, jewelry, and clothing. If a fire gutted your apartment tomorrow, would you have the cash to replace it all?
  6. Renters insurance covers only your possessions. In fact, renters insurance covers much more than just your personal property: The average policy also includes up to $100,000 in liability coverage. That means in the event of a covered loss your insurer will help cover the costs if you're held responsible for injuring another person or damaging another person's property, including your landlord's. enters insurance is hard to get. You can research providers, compare quotes, and even find an agent online

Why Should I Have SERVPRO Restore My Carpets?

3/1/2021 (Permalink)

SERVPRO is at the top of the pack when it comes to restoring carpet that has been impacted by water loss within the home. Upon arrival and formulation of our restoration plan, we inspect your carpeting and select the best equipment and methods to achieve our goals. The process includes:

  • Inspecting carpeting using moisture probe technology – this allows us to determine how deep the moisture has embedded into the carpet and the pad below.
  • Detaching the carpet with the proper tools so our technicians can further inspect to see if the carpet has delaminated or mold has begun to colonize.
  • In cases where the water has not infiltrated the carpet pad or the subfloor below, we may use centrifugal air movers to float the carpet, thus allowing warm air to circulate beneath.
  • In cases where water moisture saturates the carpet fully, we will remove the padding below and dispose of it to be replaced after the drying of the zone is complete.

So if your carpet has been damaged by water, give the professionals at SERVPRO a call! We are faster to any disaster and will get things back to "Like it never even happened."

Why SERVPRO? Experience With Water, Ice, & Other Things That Aren't Nice

2/17/2021 (Permalink)

A water loss in your Homewood residence can trace to many causes, including the natural forces that create picturesque icicles on your snow-covered roofline. Water intrusion into your attic or upper levels during the winter months is common if your property is prone to ice dams. Our highly-trained and experienced crews know what to look for when water seeps down into your home, why we can not only respond to the loss but also limit recurrence.

Ice Dams Lead to Interior Water Emergencies

The beauty of a winter snowfall can hide significant water damage in your Homewood dwelling. If the gutters on your roofline are clogged with autumn’s leaves and twigs, water can collect. A freeze and thaw cycle begins, especially if warm interior air leaks out because of inadequate insulation or failed and missing joint sealing. Snow and ice liquefy, seeping under shingles, flashings, and along the seams between the interior space and the growing dams. Because the damage starts small and is often in an inaccessible area, you might not notice it until water saturates drywall and insulation and starts its journey to other spaces. Our familiarity with water movement within a structure is why we can resolve all aspects of the damage.

Water can flow far from a roof ice dam, which is why SERVPRO of Matteson-Homewood uses cutting edge moisture detection tools when scoping your water damage project. Call us at (708) 747-9925 when water losses turn up in unexpected places during the cold of winter.

Why SERVPRO? We know how to deal with Ice Dams!

2/17/2021 (Permalink)

Ice dams are a natural occurrence when the weather is crazy in your area. If snow comes down, then the weather heats up, then it gets chilly again, you may have to deal with water damage caused by ice dams.

The ice dam moisture spreads eventually toward the lower levels of your home. Sometimes it runs through wall cavities, making itself known only when water damage along baseboards migrates into the hardwood flooring or carpeting several stories below the roof.

Damage to structural components far from a leak does not surprise our technicians, why SERVPRO commits to a thorough inspection and evaluation of all the spaces of your home. Once we determine the extent of the damage, we use state-of-the-art extraction and drying equipment to mitigate and remediate the harm.

We also help pinpoint the water entry location and help arrange for other contractors to properly insulate up to and seal around the roof edge to eliminate future water incursion.

So if an ice dam does affect your home or business, give SERVPRO a call! We are faster to any disaster and are here to help get you back to "Like it never even happened."

What Half an Inch of Flood Damage Can Do in Homewood Properties

Flood damage is easily one of the top problems property owners do their best to avoid. But there is only so much that can be done as far as drainage, ensuring the grade around the home slopes away and landscaping assistance for keeping water at bay.

Sometimes, Mother Nature is more powerful than the best-laid plans, and flood damage hits Homewood residences and wallops them. And it does not even take a lot of water, under an inch of water can wreak havoc throughout the structure, destroying both the home and its contents.

Why SERVPRO?
The technicians undergo extensive hands-on training to learn the best practices for all types of damage using the standards as taught by IICRC (The Institute of Inspection Cleaning, and Restoration Certification) considered the gold standard for the restoration services industry. Plus, they engage in on-going education to stay on top of the latest trends for advances in the restoration services industry.

Testing and Extraction
One of the first actions taken by technicians is testing the water to determine the nature of the contaminants. This allows the technicians to choose the correct types of cleaning agents to neutralize any bacteria or toxins present in the water. When substantial amounts of water are present throughout a property, even if the depth is less than an inch, the technicians may choose to use trash pumps for fast, large scale extraction.

Carpet Requires Removal
When groundwater saturates carpet, it requires disposal as a biohazard. Because wet carpet is so heavy, they extract the water then cut it into strips for safe removal.

Controlled Demo Helps with Drying
A half-an-inch of floodwater wicks into sheetrock rapidly. The technicians measure several inches over the waterline and cleanly cut it away using 'flood cuts." This opens up the wall cavity and ensures it dries appropriately, which avoids secondary issues down the road, such as mold or weakening of building materials.

SERVPRO of Matteson-Homewood at (708) 747-9925 assists local homeowners with the restoration from flood damage. The trained, certified technicians are local and arrive on-site within an hour after the call because We’re Faster to Any Size Disaster.

Removing the Flood Damage, What About the Odor in Matteson Homes?

9/30/2019 (Permalink)

Female with her finger up to her nose with a stinky look on her face. Let SERVPRO handle that odor lingering in your Matteson home from water damage.

Worried about odor in your Matteson home from water damage, no worries we deal with that as well.

Flood damage hits homes hard in various ways. Through flash floods, microburst storms, and hydrostatic pressure all bring water into the house. When storm damage happens, it must be removed as fast as possible to avoid permanent damage, mold and foul odors.

Groundwater may contain contaminants, and before coming into contact with it during flood damage cleanup in Matteson properties, SERVPRO technicians test the water to determine what they are dealing with so they choose the best methods for mitigation.

Why SERVPRO?

When a severe water loss occurs in your home, it is crucial to utilize a professional restoration service with local, certified technicians. SERVPRO team members are residents of the local community, and they work hard using their extensive training and state-of-the-art equipment to assist our friends and neighbors in limiting loss from floodwater.

Complete Drying Limits Odor

Controlled demolition is a standard action during cleanup of flood damage. This type of building materials removal is exacting and only takes out the damage and leaves sheetrock and flooring unaffected by water loss. The removal of buckled and warped sheetrock allows for more airflow during drying, which not only inhibits mold growth but also diminishes odors in the home.

Musty Odors May Indicate Mold

Because it requires warmth over 70F-degrees and high humidity levels to flourish, mold also has a tell-tale musty odor that gives away its presence. Technicians monitor water loss areas during and after the drying process to ensure that the air quality is well below sustainable levels for mold. Areas where they find mold growing are abated and treated with antimicrobial sealants to inhibit any return.

Removal of Residual Water Odors

After flooding in a home and complete drying, sometimes there are residual odors left behind. When antibacterial solutions do not eliminate it, SERVPRO technicians have a diverse array of odor neutralizing applications to use until they eradicate the scent from the property.

You do not have to live with continual reminders of the flood damage to your home. Contact SERVPRO of Matteson-Homewood at (708) 747-9925 and our team of certified professionals can make the water loss and odor in your home "Like it never even happened."

SERVPRO Restores and Even Rebuilds Damaged Homes in Matteson

Our Committed and Skilled Team is Why SERVPRO Delivers Successful Disaster Recovery in Matteson

We count the development of our high-quality team of disaster recovery experts in Matteson as our most notable achievement. Recruiting and retaining intelligent, skilled, and motivated individuals to our team mean we are sure to meet your residential disaster recovery needs faster and more efficiently. Using our training from the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) to employ the restoration industry's best practices, we commit to mitigating and remediating your water, fire, mold, or storm damage.

Water Damage
Our speedy response to your Matteson water damage serves two important purposes. First, we know that coping with water incursion is challenging and brings normal life to a halt in your home until the problem resolves. Second, water is incredibly corrosive, harming nearly every kind of building material used in conventional construction. Drywall crumbles, insulation soaks through and becomes useless for climate moderation and also poses a mold risk, metals rust, and wood swells and distorts.

Our Water Damage Restoration Technicians (WRT) use their IICRC training to assess and plan for rapid water removal immediately upon entering your home. Our signature green service vehicles contain powerful pumps and extractors for water evacuation, gas powered or truck-mounted so that we can use alternatives to the grid if your electricity is temporarily disabled for safety reasons. We assess the quality of the water, containing and disposing of it per local regulations if it is contaminated with sewage, chemicals, or other hazardous substances. Our thorough preparation for any circumstance is why SERVPRO customers express satisfaction in our work and outcomes.

Once we accomplish water removal, structural drying proceeds, crew members use principles of psychrometry, the science of drying, to achieve the best results. Warm, dry moving air causes evaporation at high rates, requiring the use of dehumidification techniques to capture the water vapor by condensation or absorption. Our employees position a perimeter of heated air movers and dehumidifiers to facilitate drying and adapt the set up until the process reaches targeted moisture levels in structural components.

Fire Damage
Not much can prepare a Matteson homeowner for fire damage. The danger of the blaze makes your priority getting your family and pets out and to a safe space. Returning to your house after the firefighting efforts often reveal a sodden, soot-filled expanse of rooms and contents that are hard to imagine ever reverting to the comfortable and welcoming abode you and your loved ones treasured. Grief and depression are understandable reactions, but we are eager to work on restoring not only your happy home but also your peace of mind.

Consider a pack-out if we suggest it as a strategy for putting the pieces back together. Our Contents Claim Inventory Service (CCIS) keep all furnishings, household goods, and personal possessions organized and secure at our production facility while our on-site crews remove water, clean soot, and assess charred areas for demolition, replacement, and rebuilding. The wide range of strategies we bring to a fire damage restoration is why SERVPRO rates highly among members of our community who experienced both fire loss and our professional response.

Our production facility technicians master specialized training in cleaning, drying, deodorizing, and renewing the look and function of packed-out items. Your insurance representatives and our office team work closely together to ensure your cleaned, repaired, and fresh-smelling house welcomes your furniture and other possessions when both types of property are ready for the reunion, inviting you back not just to your residence but to your home.

Mold Remediation
The chance of mold damage in your Matteson home is more likely than you think when you understand the life cycle of this fungal organism. Mold spores are everywhere, floating on currents in the air and settled on surfaces throughout your home. They are also found in large quantities outdoors where they provide the needed services of breaking down organic waste. They also hitch rides inside on footwear and pet paws, so even if you were able to reduce their numbers, new spores would arrive every day.

If kept dry mold spores cause little trouble, and they are so small, they are unnoticed. When they absorb moisture, however, they begin to grow within 48 hours and produce more spores, creating more extensive groups of mold called colonies. The bit of water and an organic food source fuels the multiplication. Soap scum, or even household dust, which is primarily dead skin cells, feed the mold.

Trying to manage a mold infestation yourself is risky as scrubbing can spread the spores. Our training in the restoration industry's mold remediation standards devised by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is why SERVPRO is a good fit when mold abatement is needed. Our mold remediation crews contain the moldy area using plastic sheeting barriers sealed with a negative pressure air scrubbing system during the mold removal, prevent drift of the spores. We scrape, brush, or use gentle abrasion like soda blasting to rid surfaces of the mold, bagging up the debris for appropriate disposal. An EPA-registered disinfectant application follows to inhibit a recurrence of the damage.

Storm Damage
Snow, sleet, ice, and rain all pose a threat to the integrity of your residence, but when fierce straight-line winds or tornadoes join in to increase the extremity of the weather, severe storm damage in Matteson is a likely consequence. Exteriors can take a beating with roofs sheared off, windows broken, and siding bent and torn. Responding to significant harm, including the water damage that is inevitable when structures are severely compromised, is a job for professionals.

Our team arrives as soon as possible, ready to board up and tarp holes to prevent further water damage. Overland flooding might also be an issue when several inches of rain falls in a short period or when sustained precipitation over several hours or days saturates the ground and seepage occurs. The multiple certifications our technicians hold from the IICRC is why SERVPRO takes on a storm damage scenario with confidence. We assess the damage, including categorizing the flood water and creating a mitigation and remediation plan that safely cleans up and sanitizes the premises.

If rebuilding is indicated, we have skilled technicians to complete demolition and restore your house, "Like it never even happened." It is a great relief to our customers that a revolving door of contractors does not need to be engaged to take a storm-damaged residence through the many tasks needed to secure, recover, and rehabilitate it back to preloss condition.

SERVPRO of Matteson-Homewood is ready to help the property owners in the communities we serve to find highly-qualified technicians and a reliable and experienced management team to assist with disaster strikes. Whether water, fire, mold, or storm damage is the crisis, call (708) 747-9925 day or night, and we are on our way.

Caring for Victims

Victim bags ready to help when disaster happens.

When your home is struck by fire or a major storm you may have only a few minutes to gather belongings and move to safety.  For many of us, gathering a few clothes, and the family photo album take priority over a toothbrush or comb.

At SERVPRO of Matteson- Homewood we care about the community, that is why many of our staff carry these emergency bags in our vehicles.  Each bag contains a few of the essential personal care items that many people need after a fire or storm disaster.  Our hope is that each bag can bring a bit of comfort to the community after a tragedy.

Having your own preparedness bag is very important especially if you live in an area where natural disaster such as tornado can strike.  It is also important to remember, only gather personal effects when it is safe to do so: material belongs can be replaced, but a life can not be.

  • Unattended cooking is the leading factor in home cooking fires.
  • Two-thirds of home cooking fires started when food or other cooking materials caught fire.
