Winter Storm Preparedness: Prevent Frozen Water Pipes
Winter storms are here and it won't be the last.
The National Severe Storms Laboratory categories a winter storm as having snow, sleet, or freezing rain. In Hazel Crest, we can see any of this type of precipitation throughout the winter months. When the temperature is below the freezing point and precipitation is in the forecast, that’s when our office knows what types of calls we’ll be getting: water damages.
How Water Pipes Freeze and Break
A water damage during a winter storm happens when your pipes freeze. When water freezes, it expands and creates pressure inside the pipe, which can cause it to break. The pipes that are most likely to freeze are those outside the home that are exposed. Other vulnerable pipes are those indoors that don’t have access to heat, like those under your kitchen cabinets or in the garage.
Indoor Frozen Pipe Prevention
- Before temperatures reach freezing, insulate exposed and vulnerable pipes. You can do this by installing pipe sleeves or even wrapping the pipes with newspaper.
- Close the garage door to prevent cold air from coming in.
- Open kitchen and bathroom cabinets to allow warm air to circulate around the pipes.
- Keep your home heated above 55 degrees Fahrenheit.
What To Do Until Help Arrives
If your pipes still freeze and you have a water damage, give us a call immediately and follow the following steps:
- Don’t delay. Call us as soon as you notice your water damage. The longer water stands in a structure, the more damage it will cause. As soon as you call, we will schedule a crew of technicians to travel to your home and begin remediation.
- Cut off the water source, if possible.
- Get textiles off the floor. Many homeowners rush to put down towels to stop the water flow, and that’s okay. Towels can easily be cleaned at our textile cleaning facility if need be. What you want to look out for are small fragile textiles or objects on the floor that can be damaged by water.
- Begin documentation. Start with the point of origin and all affected areas. While our technicians will also take the document, it's important to start documenting as soon as possible to prove your loss to your insurance company.
Be Aware of the Weather
Keep your eye on the weather forecast. Not only will you be prepared to travel safely, it’ll also give you to valuable time to prepare your home and keep it, and everyone living inside it, safe.

Ice Dams Can Cause More Damage Than You Think!
3/11/2022 (Permalink)
The SERVPRO of Matteson-Homewood service area has been hit with snow this week. The question we get is can snow storms be a possible hazard to my home? The answer is yes, it can!
Typically, we don’t get enough snow that hangs around long enough top worry much about this in our area. Folks in the north are a little more concerned about this than we are because of the greater amount of snowfall and generally colder sustained temperatures. But with snow covering roofs in our area and record low temperatures forecasted the conditions are right for a problem commonly referred to as ice damming.
An ice dam forms when ice builds up on the eaves of the roof and any water behind it has nowhere to go and may end up in your home. This happens because heat gathers in your attic and slightly warms the roof above. The eaves however do not warm like the rest of the roof because they do not have the warm air of your attic under them, they have the cold outside air underneath. As the snow melts from the warmer portion of the roof and runs down it can freeze over the eaves forming an ice dam. As thawing continues above the water running down is trapped behind the dam.
Water will always follow the path of least resistance. In this case it can back up under shingles. Once under the shingle it will makes its way down under the roof inside your attic. From there it can settle on the ceiling or make its way down wall cavities. If snow melts makes its way into your home don’t panic. Stay calm and call SERVPRO.
Sump Pump Replacement by SERVPRO of Matteson-Homewood
3/11/2022 (Permalink)
If your home has a wet basement, you’re not alone. The American Society of Home Inspectors estimates that more than 60 percent of homes have issues with water in the basement.A sump pump can be an effective option for preventing water damage. Installed in a pit in the basement, these units sense when the water from rain or snow melt is rising in the pit and approaching the floor level. The incoming water is then pumped outside before it can damage the home or its furnishings.Sump pumps are relatively low-maintenance devices, but you can help keep your unit operational by inspecting it regularly. Steps in a regular maintenance program can include:
- Checking the discharge line to make sure it is not stopped up or frozen. If necessary, unclog the air vent hole in the line.
- Checking the inlet screen to ensure that it’s not clogged with residue and debris. Do this three or four times per year.
- Making sure the float component is unobstructed and can move smoothly.
- Scanning the pit and removing any visible debris, mud, or stones.
- Testing the pump by slowly pouring a bucket of water into the pit. The float should rise with the water level, triggering the unit to start pumping. If pumping doesn’t begin, check to see that the unit is plugged in. Your float switch or check valve might also be at fault.
- Going outside to see that water is discharging and flowing where it’s supposed to go – well away from your home.
Once a year, disconnect the pump from the power source and remove the unit. Flush it thoroughly with water to remove impurities and debris. While you have the pump out, also clean debris from the sump pit. Reinstall the pump and reconnect the power source. Test the unit by pouring a bucket of water into the pit and making sure the pump starts. If your unit has backup battery power, replace the battery every two to three years, or as directed by the manufacturer.Always refer to your pump’s instruction manual for specific information about maintenance and operation. More information about sump pumps is available from the Sump and Sewage Pump Manufacturers Association. If your sump pump does fail Call (708) 747-9925 and a crew from SERVPRO of Matteson - Homewood will come out and dry your basement and all other ares that are wet. We also do sump pump replacement.

Flood Damage Cleanup In Flossmoor Attic Presents Unique Problem
When water enters an attic, the flood damage from a storm presents several issues. The longer the water remains, the more potential for loss, so expedited removal of all water and moisture is crucial. There is often not enough room to bring in multiple pumps to remove the water, set up air movers and use a dehumidifier, so our technicians have to get creative to pump the water and dry the affected area.
An attic in Flossmoor with flood damage has the potential to cause loss through ceiling and wall damage, mold and other secondary issues caused by the entrance of water. The necessary roof repairs should be completed as quickly as possible to eliminate further water intrusion. When space is an issue, we have special long hose attachments on truck-mounted pumps or small portable units to remove standing water. Wet fiberglass can be saved if remediation begins quick enough; your certified SERVPRO technicians have the training to determine if it can be dried or needs replacement. Soggy drywall or areas that are causing ceilings to sag are removed for safety and allowing for complete drying of the restorable regions affected by the water.
Our technicians often set up plastic vapor barriers in the attic during the drying process. This action focuses the air movement on the wet areas and limits the spread of any dust or particles to other areas of the home. We can also utilize a flex hose as a duct to move air from dehumidifiers to the attic to further eliminate moisture when there is not sufficient room to bring in a machine.
Once dry, SERVPRO technicians who are certified in odor control get to work to eliminate any foul odors left by the water. They have several resources and choose the best fit for each situation to leave the attic space clean, healthy and offensive odors neutralized.
If flood damage threatens your home, contact SERVPRO of Matteson-Homewood at (708) 747-9925 for an immediate response to your water damage situation. Because your health and safety are essential, our emergency services are available 24/7.

Why is Professional Restoration Better Than DIY?
3/1/2021 (Permalink)
What many homeowners may not realize is that there does not have to be extensive water damage for it to add up to an immense loss. There could be hidden moisture left behind in wall cavities and other tight spots that make it difficult for DIY methods to get the job done. SERVPRO features IICRC-certified technicians that have the choice between two distinct systems to ensure your home is back to appropriate humidity levels. These systems include:
- Open Drying System – This works by using outside air to speed up the drying of the impacted area. Warmer months allow us to use an open system for active, time-efficient drying. This method helps to promote evaporation while using equipment like air-movers and box fans to exchange evaporated moisture with drier outside air. We can do this by opening up doors and windows in conjunction with a centrifugal motion to create fluid air movement.
- Closed Drying System – This system works by using dehumidification equipment within a concentrated drying zone for air exchange. Such a method is excellent during times of the year when temperatures are lower, and access to the outdoors is limited. This works on the same principle, yet a closed system gives more control of the temperatures. Higher temps mean the air holds more moisture, and drying is faster. We also use desiccant dehumidifiers within the work zone for moisture removal and to thwart the potential for mold growth.
So when water, fire, or storm damages your home or business, give the professionals at SERVPRO a call! We are faster to any disaster and are here to help get you back to "Like it never even happened."

The floodwater may have brought along all kinds of debris like rocks, tree branches, silt, sand, broken glass, and plastic bags, among others. We can remove the waste using rakes and shovels. Removing the debris also helps expose structural surfaces for further evaluation or inspection.
To speed up the drying process, we extract as much water as we can. Our team can use the right pump to remove the water. For instance, we can use full trash pumps to remove floodwater that has solids. As the pumps extract water, they pass the solids along.

Flooding In Your Homewood Property
2/29/2020 (Permalink)
“Like it never even happened.”
Falling Tree Limbs Increase Flooding Chance for Homewood Houses
Torrential rainfall, combined with high winds, can be a dangerous combination for dying trees on your Homewood property. While many of the storms that pass through the area can be destructive enough to uproot entire trees and allow them to fall into nearby structures, often the removal of a full limb can also be a catastrophe for a close residence. The weight of a large tree limb can collapse a portion of a roof or puncture it to allow runoff and direct rainfall inside.
While you cannot do much to prevent the destructive forces of nature and their effect on the trees on your property, you can reach out to the right professionals to address the storm and flood damage in your Homewood house. With structural breaches, runoff and wind-driven rain can immediately enter the property, allowing it first to affect the attic space and then spread quickly down into the living areas of your home. A combination of strategies is necessary when addressing these circumstances.
Emergency Roof Repair
Removing the tree limb is one of the first ways to combat the damage that has occurred in your residence. The hole left must get covered over with a reinforced tarp framed on the outside with wood planks by our SERVPRO contractors. This coverage prevents further floodwater penetration to allow drying to be effective.
Extraction Services
Removing surface water still on the unfinished flooring and surfaces in the attic space can reduce the migration of this moisture elsewhere. For these situations, the ideal tool is the electric submersible pump or wet vacuum, as both are mobile and versatile.
Cavity Drying
The faster that our SERVPRO team can dry out the structural cavity between the attic and the floor beneath it, the better in restoration terms. Keeping the moisture damage contained in the structural assembly between the floor and ceiling between levels can allow our team to utilize tools like the positive pressure systems to dry out saturated materials on-site.
Tree limbs can be a destructive force against your house, but our SERVPRO of Matteson-Homewood restorers and contractors can arrive quickly to help. Give us a call at (708) 747-9925.

We Act Fast In Homewood After A Flood

We have the training, state-of-the-art equipment, and expertise to handle any size flood disaster. Call us right away to prevent further damage.
Planning Restoration of Flood Damage in Homewood Helps Improve the Outcome
Torrential rain can flood vast areas within a short while, leaving extensive damages in and around homes in the affected area. Although several steps are necessary to restore normalcy, flood damage cleanup, and removal of debris take up the most time. SERVPRO helps provide the necessary resources to speed up and improve efficiency when performing those tasks.
For effective clean up after flood damage incidents in Homewood, one of the best approaches is to split up the process into groups of tasks to simplify the process. In most cases, our SERVPRO crews split up restoration into these stages:
- Water extraction
- Controlled demolition to open up cavities
- Separation of salvageable and unsalvageable items
- Collection and consolidation of waste
- Cleanup and drying
If flooding leaves inches of standing water inside the home, there is a need for quick extraction to limit secondary flood damages. The challenge is that sometimes the water contains silt, mud, or even solid wastes, which can slow down the removal. Our SERVPRO technicians have the right equipment to handle any challenges during extraction. We can use submersible pumps for water deeper than 2 inches. We also have self-priming trash pumps that can handle water with solids allowing free movements around the house.
Before cleanup can happen, there is a need to establish which contents or buildings damaged by the water intrusion or contamination. The removal of such materials before cleaning eliminates the repetition of tasks. Our SERVPRO technicians use different techniques to identify damaged materials, including physical observation, testing wetness with moisture meters, and using thermal cameras to find wetness in hidden areas. Depending on what we find out, we can determine whether demolition is necessary or not. When doing controlled demolition, we use plastic bags and trashcans to consolidate the waste easing the removal process.
The recovery process after a flood damage incident is rarely easy. Call SERVPRO of Matteson-Homewood at (708) 747-9925 to help clean up all areas affected by an incident, "Like it never even happened."

Phases of Drywall Recovery in Water-Damaged Matteson Homes
11/5/2019 (Permalink)
Let SERVPRO help you through all phases of your Matteson water damage.
We will get you past the water, especially when it comes to your Matteson home.
Protecting construction materials in your Matteson home after a water loss incident requires a keen understanding of the migration of damage and how to best protect the majority of exposed materials. Drywall is particularly susceptible to water damage or flooding, as the porosity of the material allows for almost immediate penetration. Despite the fast response of our professional restorers, protecting drywall might not always be feasible or in the best interest of the homeowner.
To best protect structural elements in your house, often the best solution involves both flood cuts and repairing walls in a Matteson property. Once the drywall has become exposed to standing water from flooding or substantial flood loss, it can begin to distort and deteriorate within 24 hours. Our SERVPRO team has a full division of licensed contractors that can work alongside our mitigation efforts to offer real-time protection for your home’s construction materials like sheetrock and paneling.
Controlled demolition is a tactic used by our qualified contractors that can remove only the portions of drywall too severely damaged to restore. Flood cuts, as the case usually becomes with this wallboard, involves removing saturated portions of material from the baseboard up the wall until a dry area gets reached. The use of moisture meters and thermal imagery can determine the precise dryline our SERVPRO team can mark. Once removed, our team can access the structural cavities with drying tools like our low-profile air movers, to prevent further demolition.
Because the drywall gets removed in portions rather than entire sheets, the reinstallation of these materials can happen faster and at a reduced price. Efficiency saves our customers in more than just their wallets and helps them get back to preloss conditions and comfortable living in their house after a flood or water loss incident much more quickly.
Flood cuts are a critical element to reducing more considerable losses throughout your home. No matter what caused the damage, you can count on the expertise of our SERVPRO of Matteson-Homewood restorers to make it “Like it never even happened.” Give us a call today at (708) 747-9925.

Our SERVPRO professionals have a quick response that can help to get these hazardous debris handled with efficiency and care.

How SERVPRO Remediates Flood Damaged Matteson Homes
8/6/2019 (Permalink)
SERVPRO of Matteson-Homewood has the equipment and is ready-to-go to handle your water damage restoration needs.
How Does SERVPRO Handle Flood Damage to Furnishings in Matteson Homes?
Flood damage often happens with little to no warning. It may occur as a result of Butterfield Creek breaching its banks or merely heavy storms which are not unusual for this area of Illinois.
There are two main types of flood damage we see in Matteson homes. Floods from groundwater and rainwater. There are different outcomes for each kind of water damage in the house. When water enters the residence as rainwater, it carries a rating as clean water, and there is little danger of contamination.
Fabrics, furnishings, carpeting and other porous items have restoration potential as long as the cleanup starts within 24-hours. Groundwater is a category three biohazard and causes substantially more loss as porous items generally do not return to sanitary standards for reuse after cleaning. Common issues and actions with water damaged furnishing include:
- Excessive moisture is the cause of swelling of wood furniture frames and may result in cracking or warping unless dried soon enough.
- Rewetting or dry cleaning are methods for removing water spots on upholstery.
- Furniture with wooden legs gets placed on blocks, so the stain does not stain carpeting or rugs.
- Furniture constructed from particleboard is usually a loss as it reacts poorly to exposure to excessive moisture.
We deploy both air movers and dehumidifiers to dry upholstered furnishings quickly. SERVPRO technicians take particular care to handle the fine details regarding furniture restoration services. For example, We halt the possibility of rust transfer from a zipper on a cushion to another area on the furniture by keeping it from touching through the use of waxed paper. Once dry, if any residual water odors remain, our certified Odor Control Technicians have numerous applications to eradicate odors, which leaves the furniture with no signs (or smells) of water damage.
At the first sign of flood damage, contact SERVPRO of Matteson-Homewood at (708) 747-9925. Our certified emergency response team is available 24/7 and arrive soon after your call because We're Faster to Any Size Disaster.

From heavy torrential rainfall to the harsh winter weather that can leave accumulated snow on your roof for many days, this area of your property can eventually succumb to the damage and allow water to pass through unabated. Once vulnerabilities exist in your roof, flooding through the attic space can occur quickly under the right conditions.
The trouble with the flood damage that can result from a compromised roof of your Matteson home is that many homeowners do not know they have a roof problem until the damage has already occurred. While we have teams of qualified and highly-trained professionals available with a single call any time of the day to address emergencies that threaten your home, our contracting division can also help you to identify problems with your roof so that you can get these situations taken care of before they allow flooding to exacerbate an already wet condition.
With a roof inspection by our competent and licensed SERVPRO contractors, you can get alerted to potential problems with structural integrity before failures that result in flooding. We have all of the resources available to quickly assess any damage and to rebuild or repair these compromised portions of your roof before severe weather can take them beyond a point where they can keep water out.
If flooding damage has already occurred, we can respond quickly in these situations as well with effective mitigation solutions to prevent greater loss. Our contractors can offer emergency board up services for roof vulnerabilities to prevent further penetration while our team works to extract floodwater and begin drying out affected areas.
While you might not always know how vulnerable your roof is to water penetration, you can count on our SERVPRO of Matteson-Homewood professionals to help asses this risk or to clean up and dry your home once damage has already occurred. Give us a call anytime you need us at (708) 747-9925.

After storm tips for Matteson

Water Damage Restoration Tips For Your House After A Flood
A few years back, homes, business properties and personal items devastated by flood water were considered lost. With innovations in technology, however, the losses due to flood damage can now be restored to their former state. The process is not easy though for it requires extensive mopping up and drying of the property after severe water damage.
Flood water in home or business can damage your walls, floors, carpets and other personal belongings too. Extracting the water is impossible without proper equipment while sun drying does not guarantee your assets’ restoration to their former state before the incident. There is also an additional risk that the water in home might have damaged electrical equipment or wires. Anyone tampering with either could be in for a horrible electrocution during the water cleanup and restoration.
For these reasons, water cleanup and restoration is best handled by professionals. They have the requisite experience, state-of-the-art equipment and techniques to do the job properly and offer mitigation against further damage. If the renovation job requires extensive work, promptness in beginning the works is paramount. The less the time-frame between flood damage and refurbishment, the greater the ease of reinstating a property or item to its preloss state. There are four fundamental steps to follow with any renovation job after water damage:
1. Removal of the flood water
The first important step to restoring a property after damaging from water in home or business premise is removing the stagnant water. Often, a submersible pump is used to remove the water accumulation in various structures around the premises. The pump is highly efficient at its job and makes drying of entire submerged sections easier. As a result, it helps in mitigation by preventing further flood damage in the premises.
2. Moisture Mapping
It is crucial to get an idea of the extent of water damage and take the first mitigation steps against mold growth. The step uses detection equipment to obtain and appropriately map the moisture values on the property. Properly trained technicians use infrared and digital imaging to determine the damage extent.
3. Mold Inspection and Removal
After moisture mapping, the house will need to be prepared to repel mold and mildew. Any residual stagnant water in business or homestead leads to a favorable habitat for the fungi to thrive thus mitigation against it is essential. Water cleanup professionals make use of special detergents to sterilize the area and make the surroundings unfavorable for mold growth. Some renovation firms take advantage of deodorization and ventilation during this step to remove any airborne contaminants and lingering, unpleasant odors.
4. Water Drying
This last step ensures the property is completely dry and humidity is brought back to its normal state after flood damage. There are various water drying techniques and the one used will depend on the situation’s severity. These techniques include:
• Air Movers – They help dry the establishment by controlling humidity and promoting air circulation. Working in sections, the air movers remove liquids from all porous materials including carpets and wood. Any remaining water in home or business premises is left for more sophisticated machines.
• Dehumidifiers – dehumidifiers remove moisture from the air and help extract any remaining water in business or home environment. Broadly, professionals use either desiccant or refrigerant dehumidifier. Desiccant dehumidifiers use raw materials that naturally absorb moisture from the environment. Conversely, refrigerant dehumidifiers operate by cooling the air to make it reduce its ability to retain water. As a result, condensation occurs around the equipment’s cooling coils. Applying these machines on a large scale promptly extracts excess humidity from the air leaving no more water in business or household and thus no further water damage. The particular type of equipment, however, depends on the hired company and the how extensive the restoration job is.
With the right professionals, a successful water cleanup is possible, and any damage from water in business or home establishment can be fixed. Each job, however, is unique and requires prompt, proper investigation. This helps come up with a plan based on the steps above to restore the property after water damage. Sump pumps can really save you.
6/12/2018 (Permalink)
